An Eye-Opening Experience

Throughout this Interim I have learned a lot. This new knowledge is especially exciting because I thought that I already knew quite a bit about fashion. However, if I had not taken this interim, I do not think I would have ever learned the lessons I did. I assumed that there was nothing I did not know. How eye-opening.

Something that was especially new to me was the lesson that we had on sewing, pattern making, and fabrics. I had never really thought about how my clothes were made, or what they were made with. After this lesson, I honestly think that most of my clothes are not made to the standard of our generous teacher. And this was an awakening that I am very thankful to have had. From now on, I want to know that my stuff will last. So I am going to start examining the lining in the dressing room and checking hems before heading to any check out line.

This lesson on quality segways me right into my next realization. Where the hell are my clothes coming from? Are they all produced in the sweatshops of the developing countries of the world? To be honest, I would love to imagine them being created in the ol' US of A, by skilled workers who have made a honest living off of their hard work. But obviously that is not anywhere near the reality. So I am now going to make a conscious effort to at least look to see where they are made. I might not always turn something down because it was "made in China" but at least I will be more aware.

My final goal coming out of this interim is to be more adventurous! There are a million designers and stores with a plethora of ideas on what looks good. I was sure I already knew what looked good, at least on my frame. But that is not true because there are so many things I have not tried! So from now on I am not going to beeline for my tried and true favorites but make the rounds of the whole store, and try on things I might not normally gravitate towards. Also, I want to head into stores that I had previously walked by. I am twenty years old, why would I ever think that I knew of every product worth knowing about?

This interim has been fun and relaxing, but I also learned a lot about fashion and myself. Heres to my new fashion favorites!
